Central Asia, with its historically deep-rooted Islamic heritage, spans from Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea to Kazakhstan's vast steppes. Cities like Tashkent, Baku, and Almaty have long traditions of crescent moon observation for determining Islamic calendar dates.
The region's continental climate and generally clear skies can provide good visibility conditions. Our system delivers precise predictions based on each city's coordinates and local sunset times, serving Muslim communities across the Silk Road region.
Our system calculates five key astronomical parameters at sunset: moonset lag, moon age, moon altitude, sun-moon elongation, and illumination percentage. These are fed into a machine learning model trained on over 2,000 historical crescent sighting observations to produce a confidence score from 0% to 100%.
Moonset Lag
≥ 45 min
Moon Age
≥ 21 hrs
Altitude
≥ 8°
Elongation
