The Middle East holds special significance for Islamic moon sighting, with cities like Makkah and Madinah serving as primary reference points for Muslim communities worldwide. The region's generally favorable atmospheric conditions and lower latitudes often provide excellent crescent visibility.
From the Arabian Peninsula to the Levant and beyond, Middle Eastern cities typically enjoy clearer skies and wider crescents compared to higher-latitude locations. Our predictions leverage precise astronomical calculations for each city, accounting for local sunset and moonset conditions.
Our system calculates five key astronomical parameters at sunset: moonset lag, moon age, moon altitude, sun-moon elongation, and illumination percentage. These are fed into a machine learning model trained on over 2,000 historical crescent sighting observations to produce a confidence score from 0% to 100%.
