Moon Sighting in the Middle East

Makkah (Mecca), the holiest city in Islam, is often the primary reference point for crescent moon sighting worldwide. Located in western Saudi Arabia at latitude 21.4°N, Makkah's conditions are frequently cited in discussions about the start of Islamic months.

The city's relatively low latitude and generally clear skies provide favorable conditions for crescent visibility. Makkah's moon sighting reports carry particular weight for Muslim communities that follow reports from the Haramain (the Two Holy Mosques).

How Our Predictions Work

Our system calculates five key astronomical parameters at sunset: moonset lag, moon age, moon altitude, sun-moon elongation, and illumination percentage. These are fed into a machine learning model trained on over 2,000 historical crescent sighting observations to produce a confidence score from 0% to 100%.
