Africa's vast geography spans both hemispheres, creating diverse crescent moon sighting conditions. North African cities like Cairo, Casablanca, and Tunis share conditions similar to the Middle East, while East African cities like Nairobi sit near the equator where sighting conditions differ considerably.
With hundreds of millions of Muslims across the continent, accurate Hilal visibility predictions serve communities from Lagos to Johannesburg and from Dakar to Dar es Salaam. Each city's unique latitude and longitude significantly affect the timing and visibility of the new crescent.
Our system calculates five key astronomical parameters at sunset: moonset lag, moon age, moon altitude, sun-moon elongation, and illumination percentage. These are fed into a machine learning model trained on over 2,000 historical crescent sighting observations to produce a confidence score from 0% to 100%.
