The United States spans multiple time zones, creating varied crescent moon sighting conditions from coast to coast. Western cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles typically benefit from later sunset times relative to moonset, while eastern cities like New York and Miami may experience shorter moonset lag times.
Muslim communities across America rely on accurate Hilal visibility predictions to determine the start of Islamic months, particularly for Ramadan, Shawwal (Eid al-Fitr), and Dhul Hijjah (Eid al-Adha). Our predictions combine NASA JPL ephemeris data with machine learning trained on over 2,000 historical observations.
Our system calculates five key astronomical parameters at sunset: moonset lag, moon age, moon altitude, sun-moon elongation, and illumination percentage. These are fed into a machine learning model trained on over 2,000 historical crescent sighting observations to produce a confidence score from 0% to 100%.
